Disa cardinalis

   D. cardinalis
has a small range in the Riversdale district of the Southern Cape. Like other Disa species, this one has to contend with occasional floods that may inundate the plants and even the flowers themselves. D. cardinalis is valued for its strong red and orange colouring that has obvious value in a hybridization program. Hybrids such as D. Kirstenbosch Pride, D. Helmut Meyer  and D. Caspar  have been recognized for their excellent form and intense coloration. You can see some of the breeding between D. cardinalis and D. uniflora here.
